ESOP Nuts and Bolts
August 16, the Indiana Center for Employee Ownership joined Tim Garbinksy from the National Center for Employee Ownership, Service Providers, ESOP Companies and prospective ESOP companies for an in-person meeting ESOP Nuts and Bolts: What you need to know about Employee Stock Ownership Plans.
Many thanks to BSA LifeStructures, one of Indiana’s newer ESOPS (established late 2017), for hosting the event.
My presentation (slides only, no audio) are available below:
A few interesting observations:
- Indiana has ~ 41,000 business that are owned by members of the boomer generation and are at risk pending these boomer retirements. But as of the most complete DOL5500 filing data we have ~ 180 ESOPs. If only 1% of these boomer business converted to ESOP this would more than double the number of existing Indiana ESOPs.
- In terms of Economic outcomes (slide 6) this data presents a side by side comparison of the North Central Region Data Subset (which includes Indiana) to the Full Study Population. Based on the data – Employee Owners outperformed non-employee owners in each of these categories – So we can unequivocally state that ESOPs do matter.
